What Functional Coordinates are
The Locus Model identifies what every economic entity does, not simply what sector it has been assigned to. Where standard classification systems — GICS, SIC, NAICS — organize economic data by historical convention, the Locus Model assigns functional coordinates: precise, cross-referenceable positions in a unified system that works whether the entity is a car manufacturer in Michigan, a sovereign wealth fund in Oslo, or a sandwich shop in Tokyo.
FIS®, the Functional Information System, is the applied layer — the system that augments economic and financial data with standardized functional references, making business, employment, product, and service data unified, searchable, and stable across time and geography.
The Locus Model
The Locus Model sets out how any product-producing system is built and how it runs, giving every activity and resource a functional identity and an ordered position. Its base unit, a Locus, pairs an activity with the resources required to produce its output; a Work Locus describes the function of an economic system, a Resource Locus describes a resource performing that function, and the Locus Language treats activities as verbs and resources as nouns, so a locus is a complete sentence describing a real economic phenomenon.
An ordered arrangement of loci — a Barcode — records and communicates the functional position of an economic entity. The Enterprise Barcode is the twenty-locus version, capturing a company’s full product line and every economic system connected to it.
Functional Proximity and Trajectory
Once an entity has a functional coordinate, two further operations become possible that industry codes never supported: Functional Proximity, the measured distance between two functional locations, enabling comparison across otherwise unrelated entities; and Functional Trajectory, the computed path an element traces through functional locations over time. Systems Syntax is the logical data model underneath both — the structure on which a representation of a functional system is constructed.

The system at work
