Understanding Distinguishing Resource

The Distinguishing Resource (DR) is a syntactic category created specifically within Work Loci, tying the concept to work-locus syntax rather than resource-locus syntax. In sentence syntax it is written directly before the activity, enclosed in parentheses, functioning as a participial phrase within the locus sentence, and it is applied selectively: only a fixed, standardized set of activities take a DR at all, chosen for practical classification value rather than any theoretical rule, and most activities never take one. For example, transporting information by truck (postal service) versus by network (telecom) are otherwise-identical 1.2.2 activities distinguished only by their DR. In resource-product work loci, the two activities that take a DR (1.3.2 and 3.1.2) are triggered by different qualifying questions than when those same activities appear as activity-product loci.
