Understanding Substage

Each of a resource category’s four stages divides into three substages, notated with Roman numerals i, ii, and iii (for example B4i versus B4ii), following a general two-level numbering convention (Arabic stage, Roman substage) that applies across all categories except People. In the visual system, a resource’s substages share the color of their parent stage, since no one substage is more truly representative of the stage than another — substage is a finer grain than stage but coarser than an individual resource instance.
