The Locus Language

Every constructed language needs three things defined before it can say anything: a lexicon, a syntax, and a semantics. The Locus language is no different — and building it out this deliberately is what lets it describe a sandwich shop and a multinational bank with the exact same grammar.

Lexicon: nouns and verbs

The Locus vocabulary has two parts of speech. Resources are the nouns — any person, place, or thing, sorted into one of six mutually exclusive categories: Space, Equipment, Information, Money, Energy, and People, identified by the letters A through F. Activities are the verbs — the four root phases every Economic System performs to produce its product, numbered 1 through 4. When something doesn’t map cleanly onto a single symbol — a company that manufactures many different kinds of resources, say, or performs many different kinds of functions — the language has a term for that too: Diversified, shorthand Div, standing in for a range of possible values rather than one specific one.

Syntax: how words combine

Syntax is what turns a noun and a verb into a sentence rather than just two words sitting next to each other. The simplest Locus sentence — a work locus — pairs a verb with a direct object: 2 + C = 2C, “Produce Information.” 3 + D = 3D, “Provide Money.” 1 + Div = 1 Div, “Procure Diverse Resources.” The pattern is fixed and mechanical by design, the same way English syntax fixes where a verb has to sit relative to its object — it’s what makes a locus readable by anyone who knows the rule, not just by whoever wrote it.

Semantics: what the sentences mean

Syntax alone doesn’t produce meaning — semantics is the translation layer between a valid expression and the real-world phenomenon it stands for. In the Locus language, that translation isn’t arbitrary: the meaning of any given locus derives directly from the Locus Model itself and from the other loci it appears alongside, the same way a word’s meaning in a natural language depends on the sentence it’s embedded in. A locus isn’t just syntactically valid — it has to actually correspond to something happening in an economy, or it isn’t doing its job.

Why build a language instead of a taxonomy

This is the choice that separates the Locus Model from a conventional classification scheme. A taxonomy assigns labels. A language generates sentences — and a system that generates sentences from a fixed, small vocabulary can describe combinations nobody anticipated in advance, the same way a few dozen phonemes and a grammar can produce every sentence in English. That’s the payoff for building lexicon, syntax, and semantics this formally in Chapter 2, before any of the detailed classification work in later chapters even begins.
