The Enterprise Barcode’s Nine-Marker System

Nine markers qualify the loci throughout the Enterprise Barcode, each adding a specific piece of information a bare locus can’t capture on its own: Terminal Case, Customer Type, Customer Relationship, Product Type, Product Line, Process, Intermediary Type, Relationship Type, and Temporal Coordinate.

Several markers record what kind of agent or product is involved. The Product Type Marker records whether a product is a resource product or an activity product, appearing in the Enterprise, Customer, Co-Customer, and Customer of Customer Fields alike. The Customer Type Marker records whether an agent is a Consumer, Business, Government, or some combination. The Process Marker records whether the enterprise’s product is produced in-house or outsourced. The Product Line Marker distinguishes a company’s main product line from an auxiliary one — useful for cases like a university whose lab supplies serve both its main educational function and an auxiliary research function.

Other markers govern relationships between agents rather than the agents themselves. The Intermediary Type Marker records which of the three intermediary types (With Inventory, Agent, Payer) applies. The Customer Relationship Marker and Relationship Type Marker together describe co-customer situations: what’s flowing between customer and co-customer — product, payment, or information — and whether the two hold a Parallel or Primary/Secondary relationship. The Temporal Coordinate Marker adds a further layer to that flow, recording whether the customer or co-customer touches the Product, Payment, or Information first.

Finally, the Terminal Case Marker determines whether a work group is where classification stops — whether it sits at the Central Department Cycle of the agent using the product, which decides whether the Department Locus gets filled in directly or classification continues to a second product tier.
