Understanding Enterprise

Enterprise denotes a position in the barcode structure, not a class of company: any economic agent becomes “the enterprise” the moment its product line is the one being described, so the same firm can appear as enterprise in one barcode and as customer or intermediary in another. This distinguishes it functionally from Customer (who consumes the enterprise’s product), Intermediary (who acts on the product before the customer receives it), and Co-Customer (who consumes the product jointly with the customer). The Enterprise Field’s work locus is determined by identifying the enterprise’s product in Locus terms, and when a firm has multiple distinct products, each is treated as a separate product line with its own barcode; two markers accompany it, Product Type (resource product vs. activity product) and Process (In-House vs. Outsourced), with Outsourced capturing firms that retain IP and design control but contract out physical production or execution — for example, smartphone companies that own device IP but outsource manufacturing, or real estate developers who own and design property but outsource construction to a contractor.
