Functional Information Systems

Everything covered elsewhere on this site — the Activity Cycle, the six resource categories, the Enterprise Barcode — is theory and language. A Functional Information System (FIS) is where that theory becomes applied technology: a system that augments economic and financial data with standardized functional references, built directly on the Locus Model’s coordinate system.

What FIS actually does

In an FIS, the activities, resources, products, and supply chains of an economy get tagged by function and mapped onto the Locus Model’s standardized network, rather than sorted into the separate, incompatible hierarchical classification systems every business, job, and product is normally forced into. The practical advantage is cross-referenceability: businesses, jobs, and products all end up classified with the same system of standardized tags, which means data that would otherwise sit in incompatible silos becomes directly comparable. This is being applied right now to organize and manage financial-market risk, to functionally map how businesses, products, and jobs distribute across countries and regions, and to map job distributions within specific industries — in every case, the functional markers themselves are what enable better reference points for measurement and prediction.

The applied vocabulary beneath FIS

Several terms describe FIS’s own internal mechanics. FIS Coordinates are the applied coordinate values assigned to a specific business, job, or product — the real-world output of applying the abstract coordinate system to something concrete. Locus Functional Markers are the coded functional references derived from the Production System Model, which identifies the parts and processes a product actually requires before anything can be tagged. Functional Query is retrieval by functional coordinate instead of by keyword or code — finding things by what they do, not by what they’re labeled. Functional Maps™ — a registered mark — is the applied output built on top of all of this, powering financial analysis, classification, research, and analytics directly.

FCS: Functional Classification System

FCS — Functional Classification System — is now formally confirmed. Locus’s multifaceted economic classification system, built on the Locus Model, assigns economic entities a barcode using the same functional coordinate logic described throughout this site. With this expansion confirmed, FCS takes its place alongside Functional Query and Functional Maps as part of the applied FIS vocabulary described above.
