Understanding Department

Departments occupy the level directly beneath the agent level in the hierarchy: the agent level uses standardized activity definitions, and one level down, the Department Level contains the 36 departments, each possessing its own lower-level Work Group Cycle. The Ford case study operationalizes this by walking through Ford’s 1.3 department (storage/maintenance of car-production resources) as a concrete example of a department with its own full Activity Cycle, structurally parallel to but distinct from the firm’s Central Department Cycle. A Department is precisely a Work Group located at the Central Department Cycle of an Economic System, distinguishing it from the more general Work Group, which can occur at any level, and it serves as the reference point for the Terminal Case Marker’s termination test: a Work Group terminates if it sits at the Customer’s Central Department Cycle, i.e., at the Customer’s Department.
