A periodic-table-style grid of economic functions, echoing how the Enterprise Barcode arranges loci into fixed, comparable fields

Reading the Enterprise Barcode

Course overview

This course covers the first half of the APPLIES-TO layer: how loci get encoded into the standardized Enterprise Barcode, and the economic-agent relationships — customers, intermediaries, co-customers — that populate it. It is the largest course in the series, twelve articles long, because it moves through two genuinely different kinds of material: first the mechanics of the barcode itself — its fields, levels, and nine-marker system — then the economic-agent relationships that show up once a real company’s product line gets classified.

Where Loci, Systems, and Semiotics established the language and its visual notation, this course is the first applied layer: turning that language into a comparable record, field by field, agent by agent.

Key themes

The Enterprise Barcode’s structure of levels, sections, and fields; the nine-marker system that qualifies every locus in it; how to actually read a populated barcode; the distinctions between product, product line, and product tier; and the customer, co-customer, and intermediary relationship types that fill the barcode’s agent fields.

Intended audience

Readers who finished Loci, Systems, and Semiotics and are ready to move from the vocabulary itself to its first applied classification layer.

This is the fourth of seven courses tracing the full lexicon. If you haven’t yet, start with Loci, Systems, and Semiotics for the vocabulary and notation this course builds on. From here, Resource Loci and Classification continues the series into how resource loci get placed and classified inside the barcode. For the full term-by-term specification, see the Lexicon.
